How to become a vegetarian or how to transition to a vegetarian diet is something that many people struggle with if they really want to become a vegetarian or follow a vegetarian diet for life, but don’t know how to do that.

Here is a complete must have vegetarian guide for beginners which is a wonderful vegetarian cookbook to help you get started and go through with success on your vegetarian journey.

This is especially true if you were a non vegetarian for a long time or if you have very less experience with cooking vegetarian food or lack of resources related to vegetarian food & cooking tactics.

how to become a vegetarian beginners guide

If you are a beginner transitioning to vegetarian diet or if you are already a vegetarian running out of ideas for dinner food, I want to help you with the journey on choosing a vegetarian diet for life.

There are mainly two types of vegetarians – those who eat eggs & those who don’t eat eggs.

Being  a vegetarian means you do not use any meat or fish products in your food, you may or may not include eggs in your diet and most of the vegetarians do include dairy products in their diet.

It is important to remember that we are not here to judge anyone on the basis of their dietary choices they make, but we are here to help those who want to follow a vegetarian diet and that is the entire focus of this blog – to help those want to follow a vegetarian diet.

If you are a pure vegetarian who don’t use eggs, you can find a lot of egg free recipes in this blog. In fact majority of the recipes in this blog are egg free although some recipes do use eggs.

I occasionally use eggs, so as I already mentioned I have some egg recipes as well, but all the recipes in this blog are meat free & fish free. You can find all recipes in this blog here.

Even though I am not a vegan myself, I have a lot of vegetarian recipes that are vegan recipes too! So if you are a vegan you can find a lot of recipes in this blog that are vegan too (free of dairy, eggs, meat, fish or any animal products).

If I want to tell you how to become a vegetarian in 3 steps, here it is.

How To Become A Vegetarian In 3 Steps

  • Stop eating any meat or fish products

Majority of vegetarians consume dairy products and many of them eat eggs although pure vegetarians avoid eggs too. It is your decision to choose what level of vegetarianism you want to follow and if you eliminate all meat products and fish products you are already a vegetarian.

  • Learn To Cook Vegetarian Foods By Following A Variety Of Vegetarian Recipes

By being a vegetarian, although you can find vegetarian food outside, I find that we have very less options while we eat outside so it is always better to learn to cook while at home so you can enjoy a wide variety of vegetarian dishes.

If you love to try Indian food, Indian cuisine is rich with a lot of vegetarian recipes as vegetarianism is popular in many parts of India. You really won’t miss the meat if you like the Indian vegetarian food.

Vegetarian Essentials

Herbs & Spices

I highly recommend going through the above recipes and invest in a good variety of herbs and spices which will help you planning your vegetarian meals. There are a lot of delicious vegetarian recipes that uses exotic spices to add flavors.

Some of the spices that I love using in my food are organic cinnamon powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, black pepper, garlic powder, dried oregano powder, cardamom, cloves, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, curry powder, garam masala powder, cumin seeds powder, coriander powder and many more.

Cheese

It is must to have a look at the vegetarian cheese which is free of animal rennet since most cheese that we find in market uses animal rennet to make the cheese.

Egg Alternatives If You Don’t Want To Use Eggs

Read this post on egg substitute products for vegan baking if you are a vegetarian (or vegan) who don’t want to use eggs. This post will help you with egg free baking.

Kitchen Gadgets Helpful For Vegetarian Cooking

Some kitchen gadgets make things really easy if you are cooking up a lot of vegetables. A good quality blender and food processor is a must and I also suggest the following tools to make things easier for you.

Potato peeler which can be used to peel the potato skin and other vegetable skins so easily.

Garlic Press if you do use fresh garlic in your food.

Lemon presser to help you with extracting lemon juice.

Vegetable Spiralizer is very helpful to cut vegetables in thin stripes which can be used in noodles and pasta.

Dehydrator – if you wish to dehydrate vegetables

Pots & Pans For Cooking And Baking

If you are new to cooking invest in few good quality pots and pans sets and other utensils necessary for cooking and baking. I usually prefer steel cooking appliances for regular use and use non stick or ceramic occasionally.

So now that you have read all the resources that are helpful to embrace your vegetarian diet, just get started by going through the vegetarian recipes in the blog, buy the vegetarian cookbooks for beginners and also the vegetarian meal plans, look into the vegetarian cheese options & egg alternatives and go through the kitchen gadgets to see if you need anything which will help you and then just get started with cooking!
