Delicious Indian mango lassi recipe using fresh mangoes can be made if you have ripe and sweet mangoes.

The taste of the mango lassi made using fresh mangoes depends very much on the sweetness of the mangoes used. It is extremely important that you use sweet mangoes.

There are sour and tart mangoes but it won’t be a good idea to use them, as the drink might turn out too sour as we are also using yogurt to make the drink.

Lassi is a yogurt based Indian drink and the sweetness of the mangoes blend with the sourness of yogurt to make the perfect summer drink.

So Indian mango lassi is actually an Indian mango smoothie which is perfect for summer months.

A mango lassi made with sweet mangoes and sour yogurt tastes the best and so it is always easy to make the lassi with mango pulp which is not sour usually.

If you are using fresh mangoes to make the lassi, I suggest using alphonso mangoes if they are available in the market, as they are the best sweet mangoes to make the mango lassi.

However traditionally fresh mangoes were used to make mango lassi and so you can always make the delicious mango lassi from fresh mangoes, but just make sure you are using the sweet mangoes and try to avoid sour or tart ones.

In case you only have sour mangoes, you will have to use more sugar to balance the sourness.

I have noticed that while using fresh mangoes, the color is slightly off than the ones prepared using prepared mango pulp, but it doesn’t matter as the drink will still be delicious, more healthy and fresh when made using fresh mangoes.

If you reduce the amount of yogurt or milk or if you increase the amount of mangoes used, you can have more orange color to the drink, I find this proportions to be the best in terms of taste.

I have also used a little more amount of milk while I made mango lassi using fresh mangoes. You can try slightly different proportions like using little more mangoes or little less yogurt & milk to see which one you like the best.

Basically, adding more milk will result in more liquid like consistency and using more mangoes will result in thick and colorful lassi, while adding more yogurt will make the smoothie more thick without adding more mango flavor.

So here is how I made this delicious Indian mango lassi following the mango lassi recipe using fresh mangoes.

Ingredients

  • Ripe sweet mangoes peeled and diced 3 cups
  • Sugar 5 to 6 tablespoons or more as required
  • Whole Milk 1 Cup
  • Yogurt 1 Cup
  • Ice Cubes 2 to 3
  • vanilla essence 2 to 3 drops

Instructions

  • Transfer all ingredients to a blender.
  • Blend the mango lassi ingredients until very smooth, as we don't want any stringy fibers in the drink.
  • You may check the sweetness of the lassi as soon as it is blended and add more sugar and blend again, if desired.
  • Transfer to serving cups and enjoy the delicious, refreshing and cooling homemade mango lassi!

Notes

If saving for later use, make sure you store the lassi in the refrigerator and serve it chilled as needed.

Instead of using yogurt and vanilla essence separately, you may also use vanilla flavored yogurt (slightly reduce the use of sugar in that case since most of the vanilla yogurt will be already sweetened).
