What Is Mung Beans?

Mung beans is a very nutritious legumes.

They are very commonly used in many Asian cuisines including Indian, Chinese, Filipino cuisines.

In India, mung beans is known by the name moong dal & both whole green moong dal & the yellow moong dal which is the skin removed variety of moong dal, are used in many recipes.

They are also known as monggo beans, green grams, maash, munggo etc in different cuisines.

Mung beans is very nutritious & naturally gluten free and so mung beans is preferred by those who have diabetes, as a natural replacement to rice in many recipes.

Mung beans is also very healthy & contains less carbohydrates than grains like rice.

Also it is a very good source of vegetarian plant based protein and so it is popularly used in many vegetarian & vegan diets.

Popular recipes around the world using mung beans includes mung bean soup, mung bean curry, mung bean noodles, mung bean sprout salads etc.

Though mung beans can be easily cooked in a pot or pan on stove top, you can cook mung beans even more easily using a pressure cooker or instant pot pressure cooker.

In the below collection, many mung bean recipes are prepared using instant pot pressure cooker, but you may also make those dishes on stove top using a pan or pot.

Kerala style kanji is usually prepared using Kerala matta rice which is a kind of parboiled reddish brown rice, but here I am using white basmati rice for the ease of preparation and also because it is more easily available to me.
This is vegetarian and vegan as well, and also it is very easy to prepare, light, healthy and delicious!
We can either prepare the rice soup using a rice cooker, a pot or pan, or using a pressure cooker or instant pot.
