step by step instructions
To make the dough for naan bread:
Place the all purpose flour in a large bowl.
Add the baking powder, sugar and salt to the flour, mix well using a spoon so they are evenly mixed with the flour.
Add the yogurt also to the dry flour mixture, mix first using a spoon and then using your hands so the yogurt is evenly mixed with the flour.
First you get a crumbly flour mixture, but that is fine and you can continue kneading another couple of minutes to make the dough.
Also add the olive oil and knead well again to make a sticky dough.
Keep this dough covered for at least 2 hours of dough rising time.
Once it is done, we are ready to make the naan bread!
To make naan bread
Make a medium sized dough ball from the prepared dough, dust with extra flour and roll the ball in a flat surface or board using a rolling pin to form naan bread (to make very soft naan bread, make small balls and roll thinly).
Heat a skillet or tawa or non stick pan (iron skillet or tawa works much better than non stick pan) and grease with a little butter or ghee or oil.
Place the rolled naan bread in the heated pan or skillet, brush with a little more ghee or butter or oil and cook in medium to high heat (adjust the heat as needed) for about a minute or two until the bottom side is cooked.
Flip and cook the other side too until both the sides are golden brown in color with spots on them.
You may flip the naan bread again if needed, if it is not completely done.
Also, you may add a little more oil or butter or ghee, as needed, so the bread will cook & brown more nicely.
Once the naan bread is made, transfer the prepared naan bread to a serving dish.
Similarly make more dough balls, roll them and cook them to make more naan breads until all the dough is finished, and as you prepare transfer them all to serving plate.
I usually make about 12 naan breads from this amount of flour.
Enjoy the naan bread hot with any curry or any sides or toppings as you like. It's also very delicious as it is, even without any sides!
