Ingredients

  • 1 cup white basmati rice
  • 2 cups water or use vegetable broth
  • salt as needed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro leaves optional, for garnishing

Instructions

  • Add the butter to the pan and as the butter melts, add the rice (I also like to fry some cumin seeds, about half teaspoon in the butter before I add the rice).
  • Lightly stir fry the rice in the butter.
  • Add garlic and onion powder, mix well and stir fry for another 1 minute (make sure the rice is not burning or sticking at the bottom of the pan).
  • Add the water (or broth), enough salt, mix well. The water should be salty or it won't be enough once the rice is cooked.
  • Place the bay leaves & cinnamon stick on top and bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Once the mixture starts boiling, cover the pan with lid and cook in very low flame for 10 minutes until the rice is cooked well and the water is all evaporated. Garnish with chopped cilantro leaves if using.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork or a good quality spatula and enjoy the delicious seasoned rice with any other side dishes you like.
If you are serving the rice after some time, gently mix the rice after few minutes in intervals, so the rice will remain fluffy and won't stick to each other as it cools down.
You may discard the bay leaves & cinnamon sticks before serving, but keeping them in the rice even after the rice is cooked will add even more flavor to the rice.

Notes

Instead of basmati rice, you can also use other popular rice varieties like jasmine rice to make delicious seasoned rice.
If you are using another variety of rice, make sure to adjust the amount of liquid (water or broth) needed to cook the rice according to the package instructions and also adjust the cooking time as needed.
