Sweet Pongal With White Sugar & Milk - South Indian Sweet Pongal Without Jaggery

Sweet pongal with sugar (without jaggery) is so easy to prepare and very delicious too. It is a sweet rice dish commonly prepared in South India especially during festival times.

  • ½ cup white rice
  • ¼ cup moong dal
  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 tablespoon raisins


  • Wash rice and moong dal and drain the water well.
  • Heat ghee in a pressure cooker and add the ghee.
  • When the ghee is hot, add rice and moong dal and let it fry for a few minutes until the raw flavor is gone.
  • Add the sugar, water, milk and raisins and mix well.
  • Close the pressure cooker and cook till 3 whistles. This will take around 8 to 10 minutes.
  • After 3 whistles, switch off the pressure cooker and let it cool down.
  • Once the pressure cooker is cool, open it and slightly mash the cooked pongal with a spoon, to attain the consistency of a traditional pongal. Sweet pongal with sugar is ready and it tastes best when it is served hot !
