Brown Basmati Rice In Instant Pot

Perfect instant pot brown basmati rice recipe using long grain brown rice and extra long grain brown basmati rice (may try for other brands of long grain brown rice as well).
We use the rice button in the instant pot pressure cooker to make fluffy, delicious, chewy brown rice which is perfect every time! This is a simple, easy, quick and basic rice recipe using brown rice which is a vegan recipe as well.
If you want more softer textured brown rice, I have instructions for that too, which you can see in the instruction steps.

Equipment

  • instant pot 6 quart

Ingredients

  • 2 cups long grain brown rice
  • 2.5 cups water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt adjust as needed
  • 1 teaspoon oil

Instructions

  • Wash the rice very well in water for 2 to 3 times until the water is almost clear, discard the water used for cleaning the rice.
  • Transfer the washed rice to the inner pot of instant pot.
  • Add the water, salt and oil, mix everything.
  • Close the instant pot with lid in sealing position and press the rice button and cook for 12 minutes (some models show 10 minutes which is fine as well, and depending on the instant pot model that you have, if you have an option to adjust the time, you can set it for 12 minutes ).
The pot will take few minutes until enough pressure is built up so you will need to just wait until the pressure is build up and the cooking is finished.
  • Following the above instruction to use rice button, you will get perfectly cooked but al dente rice that is firm with chewy texture.
If you want soft cooked brown rice, you will need to use the 'pressure cook' button instead of the rice button and cook the rice for more time under high pressure. If you use the pressure cook button for softer rice, you can set the cooking time for 22 minutes to 25 minutes or even upto 27 minutes depending on how soft you want the rice to be.
  • Once the cooking is all done, press the 'keep warm/cancel' button, and wait for a natural pressure release of about 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes of NPR (natural pressure release) you can carefully do a manual release by turning the vent slowly to the venting position.
  • Once the pressure is released, carefully open the lid, fluff the cooked rice with fork.

Notes

With this instant pot brown basmati rice recipe, the rice is cooked perfectly and the texture is slightly chewy which is perfect for me.
If you like more soft rice,  you may need to use the 'pressure cook' or manual button and cook in high pressure for about 22 to 25 minutes instead of using rice button if your instant pot model doesn't allow you to adjust the time in the rice button (in Lux you can do it).
