Best Boiled Asparagus Recipe Using Fresh Asparagus

Ingredients

  • 8 oz asparagus You can use thin stems or thick stems but make sure to adjust the cooking time based on the thickness of the asparagus stalks that you are using. Also make sure to use fresh asparagus stalks!
  • 3 cups water or as needed for boiling
  • salt adjust to taste

For seasoning (optional):

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  • Wash the asparagus very well and trim off the hard woody ends.
  • Add water to a pan or skillet (make sure you can fit the asparagus in the pan and arrange them in a single layer for even cooking).
  • Also add salt and bring the water to boil.
  • Once the water starts boiling, carefully place the cleaned and trimmed asparagus in the pan or skillet, arranged in a single layer (make sure the asparagus is almost immersed in boiling water).
  • Boil the asparagus in medium heat for about 3 to 5 minutes depending on the thickness of the asparagus stems.
  • For thin stems, you just need to boil only for about 3 minutes so they will be cooked but sill retain the crunchy texture.
  • For thicker stems, you may boil for couple of minutes more.
  • Once the asparagus stems are boiled, carefully transfer them to a serving plate using long tongs.
  • Season with olive oil, lemon juice and black pepper if you like (you may use other seasonings like red chili flakes or any seasonings of your choice) and serve immediately for best results!

Notes

how to store boiled asparagus?
For best results, it is recommended to serve the boiled asparagus while it' still warm. However, if you want to save it for later use, you may transfer the asparagus to air tight food container and store in fridge where it can last for about 2 to 3 days if stored properly.
