In fact, should you wash lettuce before making salads using lettuce is a question many of us wonder especially if the lettuce comes washed. Even if the lettuce comes washed (which helps because the washed lettuce won't have any dirt and will be clean mostly) sometimes, bacteria can build up and so its always advisable to wash your lettuce(and other veggies) to be safe.

The washed and cleaned lettuce is an advantage as it reduces our work, but still it is always better to wash the produce before you use them in your raw salads like this simple romaine lettuce and tomatoes salad recipe or even if you have to cook them.

This post is specifically about washing and cleaning lettuce so let us talk about lettuce here.

how to wash lettuce leaves for salads and keep it crisp and fresh for longer time?

You can use a good quality salad spinner to wash, dry and store lettuce leaves so they remain fresher for longer time! The use of salad spinners will make your work easy but you can just wash it by yourself if you are not using a lot of lettuce often. The salad spinners come in handy if you use a lot of lettuce and you have to store them in bulk for your green leafy salads. Even if you don't have salad spinners at your home, you can wash the lettuce by yourself and dry and store them for later use.

You can also find a detailed post on how to store the lettuce greens fresh for longer here.

Whether it is iceberg lettuce, or romaine lettuce or whatever variety you have in hand, they are all very good for making a variety of salads as the lettuce leaves are crispy in nature which makes the salads refreshing and yummy non their own. I even love to just much on the crispy and raw romaine lettuce leaves. I usually remove the outer leaves (which I save for cooking in many recipes) and mostly use the lettuce leaves from the lettuce heart which look so young, fresh and clean. The lettuce leaves that are inside the lettuce heart are naturally more clean and good for salads as they are not exposed outside. Anyhow it is always better to wash the lettuce leaves before you put them into salads.

You can tear out the leaves and wash them with clean water and just gently dry them using a paper towel, if you want dry leaves. If you are not immediately using the leaves, they will just dry naturally in some time. I really do not mind some water remaining in the leaves if I am just enjoying them alone, but if you are preparing lettuce salads for family or guests, you should dry them before mixing in with other ingredients.

This is important as the water remaining in the leaves may affect your salad dressing by thinning it. You can use a salad spinner which can be used to easily wash, dry and store your lettuce which will remain crisp for later use. Salad spinners is an easy solution especially if you make a lot of green salads using lettuce and if you have to wash, dry and store a lot of fresh and green lettuce crispy for salads.

Hope you found this post on how to wash lettuce and keep it crisp.
