What Is Mexican Agua Fresca Drink?

Agua fresca is a very popular drink from Mexica and Central America and it is usually made with fruits like melons, cantaloupe etc with added ice, lime juice etc which makes it a very refreshing and cooling drink, popular especially during the hot summer months.

The main ingredients of agua fresca is fruit, usually melons, pineapples, cucumbers etc or cantaloupes, lime, sugar and ice & the term agua fresca basically means fruit water.

In this recipe for watermelon agua fresca, I used honey instead of sugar, you may substitute honey with any other natural sweetener or you can use sugar if you wish, to keep the flavors more authentic.

As you can see, the ingredients are all very refreshing and cooling making agua fresca a very delicious, refreshing drink.

In fact, agua fresca is more like a fruit smoothie without dairy like yogurt or milk.

The texture of the drink is mostly like a light smoothie though it is much lighter in texture unlike smoothies which are usually thick.

It is more kind of a juice in texture so it kind of resembles both fruit juice and fruit smoothies.

It is basically made of fruits, ice, sugar and lime juice!

In this agua fresca, we use watermelon and we also add fresh mint leaves. So this is a watermelon mint agua fresca which is similar to a fresh watermelon mint juice smoothie without yogut or milk.

What is Agua De Sandia drink?

Watermelon agua fresca is also popularly known as Agua De Sandia (remember that all agua fresca is not made of watermelon while agua de sandia is always made of watermelons).

So, agua fresca made of watermelons is generally referred as Agua De Sandia!

Watermelon cucumber agua fresca is another popular variation from watermelon agua fresca.

When you make watermelon cucumber agua fresca, you also add cucumbers (peeled, seeds removed) to make the drink.

You may use the mint leaves or leave out the mint leaves as you like, though I recommend using it if you have fresh mint leaves and if you like the flavor of mint!

To make watermelon cucumber agua fresca, you can add about ½ of a medium sized cucumber in this recipe.

Just make sure to peel the cucumber, deseed and slice and add to the blender along with watermelon and other ingredients and blend until smooth.

Also, make sure to use lime juice and honey or sugar and ice cubes, just like we do in the watermelon agua fresca!
