This recipe for butter rice is so simple, you don’t even need to saute the ingredients at first, but you can just dump the ingredients to the pot and cook to make the rice.

However, if you wish to do the sauteeing in butter for even more flavor, I have included the instructions to do that.

What is butter rice?

butter rice

Butter rice is a simple but delicious flavored buttery rice.

As you can see, we use butter to flavor the rice, which makes up the most important two ingredients of this dish (butter and rice).

To make butter rice, you may use any of your favorite rice, but different kinds of rice will have different cooking times and the amounts of water needed to cook the rice may also differ.

In this easy recipe, I used long grain white basmati rice which is very fluffy rice perfect to make delicious, butter rice.

buttered rice

The rice doesn’t stick to each other once cooked, each grain is separate and fluffy you will love it!

I have used few spices to add more flavors to the rice which you may adjust based on your preferences and based on the availability of ingredients.

More easy flavored rice recipes which makes great side dishes for any meals like lunch or dinner includes seasoned white rice, instant pot ghee rice (Indian style buttered rice), authentic ghee rice on stove top, jeera rice (cumin seed flavored rice), coconut milk rice, cilantro lime rice, yellow rice, vegetable rice pilaf (pulao), Indian style vegetable paneer biryani, simple egg fried rice, sweet corn pilaf etc!

So here is how you can make easy, delicious buttery rice in the instant pot (or stove top) following this easy recipe.

How to make butter flavored rice in instant pot (or stove top)?

buttered rice in instant pot

To make easy, simple and delicious butter rice, we use the following ingredients.

ingredients to make butter rice

white basmati rice 2 cups

water or vegetable broth 2.5 cups

butter 4 tablespoons

onion powder 1 teaspoon

garlic powder 2 teaspoons

black pepper powder ½ teaspoon (optional)

bay leaves 2 (optional)

cinnamon sticks 1 (optional)

salt adjust to taste

Step by step instructions

Instant pot instructions

Wash the rice very well and add to the instant pot.

Also add the water (or broth), salt and spices, mix well.

Also place the butter on top and if you are using bay leaves and cinnamon sticks, add them too.

Close the instant pot with lid in sealing position and cook in high pressure for 5 minutes.

Once the cooking is done, wait for a natural pressure release for 10 minutes and then do a careful, gradual controlled manual pressure release.

Once the pressure is all released, carefully open the lid, remove the bay leaves and cinnamon sticks using long tongs and gently fluff the rice using a fork or a good quality spatula.

Do not stir the rice again for another few minutes and let it cool down slightly.

You can fluff the rice carefully once in cools down slightly (after about 10 minutes) to prevent the rice from sticking as it cools down.

Serve the fluffy, delicious buttered rice with any curry of your choice or any vegetable side dishes, tofu, paneer etc or any side dishes as you like!

I served this buttered rice with kale chickpea curry made in instant pot, but I also like to serve this rice with any dal curry, any chickpea curry, paneer dishes like palak paneer, matar paneer etc.

You may also melt the butter in the instant pot using saute function and then lightly fry the rice, cinnamon sticks and bay leaves in butter along with the spices (for about a minute) for more flavor!

Stove top instructions

Melt the butter in a large pot or pan and add the bay leaves and cinnamon sticks, if using and lightly fry them.

Add the rice and salt and lightly fry for about a minute.

Add the spice powders and stir fry for another one minute.

(To make the preparation even more easier, you may skip the above steps and directly add the ingredients along with the water or broth and butter to the pot or pan, just like I have explained in the instant pot recipe).

Add water or broth, mix well and bring the mixture to a boil.

Once the mixture starts boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover with lid and cook the rice for about 10 minutes until the rice is cooked and the water is evaporated.

If there is any water left, you may heat the pan (without lid) in medium heat for about a minute, so the leftover water will evaporate.

Fluff the rice gently with a fork and serve with any side dishes of your choice.

If you store it for longer time, do not stir the rice a lot while it’s hot, but gently fluff in regular intervals so the rice won’t stick.

How to store butter rice?

Butter rice can be easily stored in the refrigerator for another 3 to 4 days where it stays fresh.

Make sure to store properly in air tight containers in the refrigerator so it stays fresh for longer time, like three to four days, as I mentioned.

If you want to refrigerate the rice, make sure to cool down the rice to room temperature before you store it in the fridge.

Also it is a good idea to fluff the rice and make sure the grains are all separate from each other, before storing in the refrigerator, because the rice will stick to each other and will not have a good texture if you do not fluff the rice before transfering to the refrigerator for storing.

Below you can see the detailed recipe for easy butter rice made in the instant pot.
