Dry black beans is directly cooked in the instant pot pressure cooker without soaking in water first, to make delicious black bean soup/stew or curry as you can adjust the spices and seasonings based on your preference!

I have also this no soak dry chickpeas (garbanzo beans) in instant pot, if you want more easy, no soak beans recipes!

You can just enjoy this seasoned black bean soup/stew as it is or you can add heavy cream or coconut milk to make it more creamy soup!

Is black beans & black turtle beans the same or are they different?

Many people wonder if black beans and black turtle beans are the same, and why it has got this name.

In brief, black beans and black turtle beans are the same thing, although it is most commonly known as black beans (the other name doesn’t seem to be very popular).

The reason why it got this name is because it kind of resembles the shell of a turtle, it seems and the beans is obtained from the plant named black turtle plant.

However, they are tiny black colored beans and sometimes they look dark coffee brown in color & once they are cooked, they are so delicious so you can use them in salads, curry, stews, soups, burgers and more!

How long to cook dried black turtle beans in instant pot pressure cooker?

In instant pot pressure cooker, we only need to cook the dried black turtle beans for about 30 minutes of time.

The instant pot will take few minutes to come to pressure and once the 30 minutes of cooking is done, we need to wait for a natural pressure release which will take another few more minutes, after which you can open the instant pot.

So here is how you can make this quick, easy, simple and delicious black beans in instant pot without soaking in water first.

How to cook dry black beans in instant pot without soaking?

To cook dry black beans in instant pot directly, we can follow this simple and easy instant pot black beans no soak recipe.

We use the following ingredients in this recipe, which may be adjusted based on your preferences.

dried black beans 2 cups

water or vegetable broth 4 cups

onions 2 medium sized peeled and sliced

garlic 2 tablespoons minced or crushed

tomato sauce 2 tablespoons

lemon juice 1 tablespoon

hot sauce 1 tablespoon

salt adjust to taste

turmeric powder ½ teaspoon (optional)

red chili powder ½ teaspoon (optional)

black pepper powder ½ teaspoon

coriander powder 2 tablespoons (optional)

heavy cream or coconut milk ¼ cup (optional)

cilantro leaves chopped 1 tablespoon (optional)

Step by step instructions

Wash the black beans very well in water and add to the instant pot.

Also add the sliced onions, water (or broth) and salt to the instant pot.

Also add all the spice powders, lemon juice and sauces, mix well.

Close the instant pot with lid in sealing position, cook in high pressure for 30 minutes. If you want very soft black beans, you may cook for about 35 minutes instead of 30 minutes.

Once the cooking is done, wait for a natural pressure release.

Once the pressure is all released, carefully open the lid and stir the contents.

Add heavy cream or coconut milk if using, stir in and garnish with chopped cilantro leaves, if desired.

This black bean soup/stew lasts in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 days if stored properly in air tight containers. In fact, it may stay fresh even longer if stored properly, though I haven’t tried that myself.

You may also freeze black bean soup in the freezer using freezer safe bags or containers for longer storage.
