Plum Juice Vs Prune Juice

fresh plum juice

Plums are fresh fruits while prunes are dried plums.

So the difference between both types of juices is that while plum juice is made from fresh plums, prune juice is made from dried plums, that is prunes.

Though basically they are made from the same fruit, they don’t really taste the same and they both have different health benefits too.

Prune juice is usually made by boiling or cooking the prunes first and then extracting the juice, since the fruit is in its dried form.

To make the fresh juice, since we use fresh plums we do not need to cook the fruits first, but you can just extract the juice from the fresh plums for the best results.

Benefits Of Plum Juice

As you know, prune juice made of dried fruits has a lot of health benefits like aiding digestion.

Juice made from fresh plums too have a lot of health benefits, as it is rich in fibers and healthy nutrients.

Just like any other food, I recommend enjoying this juice in moderation because too much of anything won’t be good!

You can read more about the health benefits of drinking prune juice here and the health benefits of plums here.

You can get more information on black plums health benefits here.

However, keep in mind that in this juice recipe, I have used sugar to add sweetness to the juice.

If you are looking to drink this juice just for its health benefits, you might want to skip the sugar or use a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup instead.

Without any sweetner, I have found the juice made of fresh plums a little sour, so it is just a personal preference to use sugar to add more sweetness.

What Kind Of Plums Are Best For Juicing?

To make fresh juice, I used ripe black plums which were sweet as well.

Ripe black plums are perfect to make delicious, cooling and refreshing juice!

This is because they are not too sour usually, and they are also on a light sweeter side.

The inside of the black plums are usually light yellow in color when ripe.

You may use other varieties of plums as well, like the red plums but they tend to be a little more tart compared to the black plums.

Whatever kind of plums you decide to use for making the juice, make sure to use ripe fruits and also try to choose sweet ones rather than sour plums for the best results.

If your plums are too sour, you might want to slightly increase the amount of sweetner that you are using to balance the sourness of the plums.

I also have this easy and delicious plum jam without pectin in instant pot, which I made using red plums!

Should You Peel The Plums?

This is a question I had in my mind too when I was trying to make the juice by myself for the first time.

I tried it both ways, with and without peels and they both turned out delicious.

However, I do not prefer to peel the plums most of the times, because the peels have nutrients too, and most of the time this juice is made to enjoy the maximum benefits of its nutrients.

The peels of plums contains a lot of fiber, so you may want to retain the peels of the plums while making the juice.

I do not peel the plums while making plum jam too!

However, when you make the juice, you will need to strain the juice using a good strainer to remove any residue from the peels and also the foam that forms while making the juice.
