What Is Jasmine Rice?
Jasmine rice is a popular variety of long grain rice available as white rice or brown rice.
White jasmine rice is more popularly used, especially in Asian, Thai cuisines and it is also popularly found in American cuisine as well.
Once cooked white jasmine rice is fluffy but slightly sticky in texture and it is the perfect rice to be used in fried rice or you can just enjoy it as plain cooked white rice along with any vegetable side dishes, curry or any side dishes as you like.
Another popular variety of long grain rice is white basmati rice, which you can use in place of jasmine rice as a substitute (and vice versa) in many recipes including fried rice, pilaf etc (the cooking time and water to rice ratio is slightly different for basmati rice).
White Jasmine Rice Vs White Basmati Rice
White jasmine rice and white basmati rice are both popular long grain white rice varieties.
The cooking times and rice to water ratio for both the rice varieties are slightly different and so you shouldn't be using the same amount of water to cook both rices.
Also, the texture of white basmati rice is more firm and fluffy if you cook it right and it is popularly used in Indian cuisine to make plain rice, pulao (pilaf), biryani etc.
Jasmine rice is also similar to basmati rice, but the taste is slightly different and also the rice is fluffy but slightly sticky and more softer in texture.
The amount of water required to cook jasmine rice is slightly lesser than the amount of water required to cook basmati rice, but at the same time, the amount of time to cook jasmine rice on stove top is slightly longer than the time required to cook basmati rice.
Rice To Water Ratio To Cook White Jasmine Rice On Stove Top
For 2 cups white jasmine rice, you need 3 cups of water (or you may use broth for more flavor), if you cook white jasmine rice on stove top.
In instant pot pressure cooker, for 2 cups of white jasmine rice, you only need 2 ¼ cup water.
How Long To Cook White Jasmine Rice?
On stove top, you need to cook white jasmine rice for about 14 to 15 minutes time in boiling water (with the right rice to water ratio) to make perfect, fluffy rice!
In instant pot, I recommend cooking white jasmine rice for 7 minutes in high pressure followed by a natural pressure release of 15 minutes.

How To Cook Jasmine Rice On Stove Top?
To make perfect, fluffy white jasmine rice on stove top, we use the following ingredients.
ingredients
white jasmine rice 2 cups (rinsed)
water or broth 3 cups
salt adjust to taste (optional)
oil 1 tablespoon
lemon juice 1 tablespoon
Step by step instructions
Add the water (or broth) in a large pot or saucepan.
Also add oil, lemon juice and enough salt (if using), heat the mixture and bring it to a boil.
Once the mixture starts boiling, carefully transfer rinsed jasmine rice to hot boiling water (make sure not to splash any water as it's very hot).
Stir the contents and close the pan with a tight fitting lid.
Reduce the heat to low and cook for 14 to 15 minutes until rice is cooked completely and there is no water left.
If the rice is perfectly cooked and if there is little water remaining at the bottom of the pan, you can keep the pan open without lid and heat for few seconds in medium heat so the leftover water is evaporated quickly.
Once the rice is cooked, turn off the heat and immediately transfer the pot or pan to a cool place so the rice is not further cooked in the heat.
Fluff the cooked rice gently with a fork or you may gently stir once using a good quality spatula.
Too much stirring of hot rice can make it mushy, so do not stir further.
Serve immediately if you like the rice hot or allow the rice to cool down for another few more minutes (about 1o to 12 minutes) and gently fluff again so the rice will stay fluffy with each grain separate as it cools down
Enjoy the fluffy white jasmine rice with any side dishes like vegetables, curry, pickles etc as you like.
