Chickpea flour pancakes made using chickpea flour (garbanzo bean flour), is gluten free, easy to make, delicious pancakes without sugar! These are savory pancakes that is perfect for a sugar free, heathy and delicious breakfast. Serve these pancakes with potatoes, fried eggs like over easy eggs or sunny side up eggs or any vegetable side dishes as you like, to make a quick and simple, yet great breakfast or brunch! These are homemade from scratch using ground chickpea flour, and it is unique and delicious!

What Is Gluten Free Chickpea Flour Pancakes?

Chickpea pancakes made using chickpea flour is referred as chickpea flour pancakes.

Chickpea flour is made from ground chickpeas or garbanzo beans. It is naturally gluten free flour as it is made from beans instead of grains.

Other grain free pancakes or thin crepes made from beans include mung bean pancakes (pesarattu dosa), moong dal dosa etc!

Indian rice dosa or crepes made out of rice & dal is another popular kind of gluten free pancakes or thin crepes, but they are mostly savory crepes enjoyed with side dishes and not sweetened like American pancakes.

In Indian cuisine, chickpea flour is used very commonly as it is a great vegetarian/vegan source of protein, fibers and many other nutrients.

Chickpea flour or garbanzo bean flour made from ground chickpeas is also known as gram flour sometimes.

In India, chickpea flour is often known by the name besan flour, which is used to make a thin crepe like pancake known as besan cheela or chilla (this recipe is different from traditional Indian cheela).

Besan flour is also used in Indian cuisine to make many other snacks like besan ladoo, besan halwa and more!

In this pancake recipe, we use yogurt as one ingredient so this is not a vegan recipe, though it is eggless, vegetarian pancakes recipe!

So here is how you can make easy, simple, fluffy and delicious chickpea flour pancakes from scratch!

How To Make Easy Chickpea Flour Savory Pancakes?

To make easy homemade chickpea flour pancakes from scratch, we use the following ingredients.

chickpea flour 1 cup

yogurt ½ cup

water 1 cup

salt adjust to taste

baking powder 1 teaspoon (optional)

onion powder ½ teaspoon

dried minced onions 2 tablespoons

garlic powder 1 teaspoon

paprika or red chili powder ½ teaspoon

olive oil 2 tablespoons (plus as needed to grease the pan)

Step by step instructions

Place the chickpea flour in a large bowl.

Also add salt, baking powder, garlic and onion powders, mix well so the ingredients are evenly mixed.

In a different bowl, add the yogurt and whisk well so there are no lumps and the yogurt is smooth.

Add the water to yogurt and mix well to form a diluted mixture.

Add this yogurt and water mixture to the dry chickpea flour mixture slowly and mix well so that there is no lumps or dry flour left in the bowl.

Alternatively, you can first add whisked yogurt to the dry flour, mix with the flour and then add the water to make the pancake batter!

If there is any lumps formed during the mixing and if the mixture is not smooth, you can continue to mix using a spoon or you may run it through a blender or food processor to make it easy.

Once the mixture is formed, also add dried minced onions, oil and paprika (or red chili powder) and mix well to combine with the batter.

To make the chickpea flour pancakes:

Grease a non stick pan or iron skillet and heat it.

Once the pan is hot, add two ladles of batter on to the pan and let it cook for a couple of minutes.

You may add little more oil if necessary.

Also, if you want to fasten the cooking process, you may cover the pan with lid and continue cooking.

Once the first side is cooked, carefully flip the pancake and cook the other side too, for another couple of minutes.

You may flip and lightly cook the first side one more time if you wish, so the chickpea flour pancake texture will be more nice with golden brown spots on it!

Once it’s done, transfer the pancake to a serving dish.

Similarly cook all pancakes until the batter is over.

If you use the optional baking powder in the ingredients, the pancakes will have more softer fluffy texture with a lot of tiny holes in them.

If the baking powder is not used, the pancakes will still be tasty and soft, but the texture will be slightly different.
