Can You Make Over Easy Fried Eggs Without Flipping?

Technically, the name “over easy eggs” means eggs flipped and cooked so it will be incorrect to say to you can make “over” easy eggs without flipping.

However, it is possible to achieve the same runny yolk texture and completely cooked egg whites similar to over easy eggs just by using basted eggs technique (covering the pan with a lid and cooking the eggs in steam) which is what we follow here in this recipe.

However, we also flip the egg at the end to make over easy eggs.

If you do not want to flip the eggs, just skip the flipping part and you can still enjoy perfect eggs with runny yolks and completely set whites!

Over Easy Eggs Vs Fried Eggs – Are They The Same?

fried over easy eggs

Over easy eggs are one popular type of fried eggs where the egg yolks are runny and the whites are cooked.

The eggs are lightly fried in butter or oil but the yolks are not completely cooked here.

fried over easy eggs with runny yolks

While over easy eggs are a popular type of fried eggs mostly served for breakfast, all fried eggs are not over easy eggs, as many people prefer the yolks to be more cooked and just don’t want it to be runny.

So you can make fried eggs in other ways too, by cooking the yolks a little more to make over medium eggs or by cooking the egg yolks completely to make over hard eggs.

Over Easy Eggs Vs Over Hard Eggs Vs Over Medium Eggs

Fried eggs can be made in other ways too, like over hard or over well eggs, over medium eggs etc.

In over hard eggs, the yolks are completely cooked and in over medium eggs, the yolks are cooked more than over easy eggs, but still not completely cooked so they have a medium soft texture which is only slightly runny.

These are slightly different from sunny side up eggs (where the yolks are runny too).

Unlike sunny side up eggs, over easy eggs are flipped and lightly fried on both sides!

You can also make basted eggs which is another way of making fried eggs!

So here is how you can easily and quickly make perfect, over easy eggs at home!

How To Make Fried Over Easy Eggs?

To make fried over easy eggs at home for breakfast or brunch, we use the following ingredients.

Ingredients used:

eggs 1 large

butter or oil 1 tablespoon

salt a pinch

black pepper ⅛ teaspoon or as preferred (optional)

Step by step instructions

Melt the butter in a heated non stick pan (use a small sized pan for better results, or the egg may spread too much).

Keep the heat in medium low and carefully crack the egg into the pan so the yolk is not broken.

Sprinkle little salt (only a pinch of salt is needed).

Cook in medium heat for few seconds until the white is lightly set (about 20 to 30 seconds).

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid and cook for about 50 seconds (by this time, the egg yolk will be usually covered with a thin layer of white).

Once this is done, carefully flip the egg with a silicone spatula (if using steel spatula, there is an increased risk of breaking the yolk) and fry the other side for another 5 to 7 seconds (if you cook for more time, the texture of the egg yolk can quickly change from runny yolk to medium cooked yolk or hardened yolk so make sure to stop cooking immediately!).

Immediately and carefully transfer the fried egg on to a serving dish, sprinkle with black pepper powder if you desire (also you may use more salt and other seasonings like garlic powder if needed) and enjoy immediately for best results!

Frying More Than One Egg At A Time

In this recipe, we have used only one large to keep it simple, easy and more convenient even for beginners learning to make over easy fried eggs.

However, you can fry one, two or three eggs at the same time in the pan using just one tablespoon of butter or oil.

When you make over easy eggs, the yolks are runny and have an increased chance of breaking when you try to flip them or try to transfer them to serving plates.

So, if you are frying two or three eggs at time, it is a good idea to first use the spatula or a spoon to gently slice the eggs across the whites where they are joined and then flip each individual eggs carefully.

This will help you to flip the eggs more easily.

When you try to flip 2 or 3 fried eggs together, there is a chance of the yolks slipping off and spreading in whites and the pan creating a mess.

So unless you are experience doing this, it is always better to flip the eggs separately, doing one at a time, if you are frying more than one egg at a time.

Below you can get the detailed recipe for making over easy eggs at home!
