    what is mango lassi?

As I mentioned, mango lassi is actually mango smoothie popular in India. Mango lassi is a very delicious drink prepared using mangoes, sugar, yogurt, milk, cardamom (or vanilla for flavor) etc as the main ingredients. Basically, the name lassi refers to drink made using yogurt (or curd or dahi as known in India) and plain lassi is often prepared with yogurt without using any fruits as well. This is a cooling drink made using yogurt & sugar as the main ingredients and mangoes are often used to make lassi as this is a very delicious, flavorful combination which makes a very refreshing drink whether its summer or winter. Occasionally, other fruits like strawberries, peaches etc are also used to make lassi or smoothies but mangoes are often used in India to make lassi since mangoes are widely available in India, and also because its too delicious!

main ingredients in mango lassi or mango yogurt smoothie

Main ingredients in this Indian mango smoothie are mango pulp (or mangoes) and yogurt. In India, yogurt is generally referred to as curd or dahi (as in hindi). Though mangoes and yogurt are the 2 most important or main ingredients in mango lassi, we often add other ingredients like milk, cardamom etc for adjusting the consistency of lassi and also to add flavor. Some people do not use milk in their lassi, if they prefer a thicker texture and more sour flavor for the lassi. So depending on your personal preferences, you may adjust the amount of milk used or you may even skip the milk altogether. Personally, I prefer a combination of yogurt & milk along with mango pulp to make the lassi, as it gives the perfect texture and consistency for the lassi.

Also if you do not have cardamom powder (which is actually an important ingredient used in India to flavor food, especially drinks and desserts), you can use vanilla extract to add flavor to the lassi.

Swad Kesar Mango Pulp Hamper Set(6Pack)Swad Kesar Mango Pulp Hamper Set(6Pack)Using mango pulp to make Indian mango lassi or mango smoothie is very easy, but if you have fresh mangoes at home, you can make fresh mango smoothie using fresh mango too.

You can use this swad mango pulp to make this yummy Indian mango smoothieusing mango pulp.

This authentic Indian mango lassi recipe is quite simple to make, but tastes so delicious and refreshing. You can actually adjust the ingredients and make the lassi according to your taste buds. You may adjust the amount of the yogurt or milk used and adjust the amount of sweetener, if used. You can also try adding your favorite spices and see how you like it.

So here is how to make this delicious Indian mango smoothie.

how to make mango lassi with mango pulp?

Mango lassi or Indian style mango smoothie can be made using the following ingredients.

ingredients used to make mango lassi

    • 2 cups mango pulp (chilled preferred)
    • 1 cup yogurt (curd) chilled
    • ½ cup whole milk chilled
    • 2 ice cubes optional
    • 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or use pinch of cardamom powder for authentic taste

    step by step instructions

    • Put all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
    • Refrigerate the lassi and serve chilled as need!

Notes: Mango lassi or mango smoothie tastes the best while it is chilled and cold! You can make this mango smoothie t home using homemade fresh mango pulp made from fresh mangoes as well. You can use fresh mangoes or frozen mangoes for making the lassi. I had used store bought mango pulp so it was easy for me to make the lassi. I have noticed that while you can make yummy lassi from homemade mango pulp or peeled and diced fresh mangoes, there is a chance that you will find more fibers of mangoes in the lassi if you are using mangoes with too much stringy fibers or if you don't blend the lassi until smooth and well blended. You can use my above mentioned recipe for fresh mango smoothie using fresh mangoes (mentioned at the beginning of this page) if you like.

If you want a very smooth texture for your mango smoothie, it is easy to use the mango pulp from stores or online. However the mango pulp fibers are healthy for you, so it is perfectly fine to use fresh mangoes for your mango smoothie recipe and it will be more fresh and healthy too. Either way, I am sure you will love this mango drink, if you love mangoes!

can you use frozen mangoes to make mango lassi?

Yes, you can use frozen mangoes too, to make mango lassi. If you are using frozen mangoes, you may skip the ice cubes or keep them too if you want the lassi to be more frosty.

can you make vegan mango lassi?

As you see, yogurt and milk are two of the main ingredients I used in this recipe. To make this vegan, you may replace yogurt with any vegan yogurt of your choice and also you may use almond milk or coconut milk for milk based on your preference. The flavor of vegan mango lassi or smoothie will also depend on the flavors of the vegan yogurt and milk you choose, so make sure to choose your favorites!

    how to store mango lassi?

Mango lassi is best served fresh and chilled. So if you have leftovers, store the remaining lassi in a jar and keep it refrigerated until use. If you want to save it more than a couple of days, you may transfer the lassi to ice cube trays and store in freezer for few more days. When its time to serve, you can blend the frozen cubes of lassi in the blender until smooth and serve!

It was easy to make. I used 2/3 of a can of mango pulp; 1/4 tsp of ground cardamom. The base recipe is very tasty; we just like it a bit stronger taste. Thanks so much!!
