how to boil eggs in instant pot without rack or trivet?

If you wonder if you can still make perfect hard boiled eggs or soft boiled eggs in the instant pot pressure cooker without using a rack or trivet for placing the eggs, then yes, it is possible! While using a trivet or rack helps to arrange the eggs perfectly in the instant pot, reducing any chances to collide each other while boiling, you can also cook the eggs in the instant pot without a rack as it is really not necessary to make the eggs.
You can directly boil the eggs by placing the eggs in the inner pot of the instant pot along with water, just like you do for boiling eggs on stove top. Boiled eggs on stove top can be done perfectly using a pot or pan. That's what I always did before I started making boiled eggs in the instant pot and they always turned out perfect too. However, boiling eggs in the instant pot pressure cooker is much easier than boiling the eggs on stove top using a pot or pan.
While boiling eggs in a pan on stove top requires placing the eggs in a pan with water enough to immerse the eggs, the instant pot requires only minimal amount of water to cook the eggs and the eggs need not be completely immersed in water. Instant pot method is much faster, doesn't need monitoring and the eggs are perfect and delicious!
You can decide the texture or consistency of the eggs by adjusting the timer so easily. The whole process takes quite a few minutes only, which is much faster than stove top method!
do the eggs break or crack in the instant pot?
While I haven't had an egg break or crack in the instant pot, it is still a possible thing to happen, just like it can happen when you boil the eggs in water on stove top. This can happen due to many reasons.
Some eggs may have a hairline crack even before you start cooking them. So naturally, when you boil that egg, the crack will increase further which is very normal. If any of the eggs that you place for cooking in the instant pot has a hairline crack, it will have a tendency to break it's shell (mostly slight break only) and leak some of the white and yellow parts of the eggs.
However, even if the eggs break while you boil them, they are usually perfectly edible though, since they are completely cooked. Another reason for a cracked egg is that the egg might have moved around and collided with other eggs while you boiled them.
When you use a rack or trivet, the chances of this happening is very less. However, when you boil the eggs directly in the pot, I guess there is more chance to that possibility just like it can happen when you boil the eggs in water on stove top. Keep in mind that it is perfectly normal that sometimes eggs do crack while we make boiled eggs, but the good news is that they are perfectly edible!
One tip to reduce the chances of eggs breaking or cracking in the instant pot is to place them around the edges of the pot, like in a circle so they won't move much while boiling. If you keep them towards the center, there is more chance of the eggs moving around. However, this is only possible when you are boiling about 6 to 8 number of eggs. If there are more eggs to boil, this is not possible but you still need to place the eggs in a single layer for the best results.
- Another important thing to make sure is not to move the instant pot once you have placed the eggs in the inner pot of the instant pot. Make sure the inner pot is already inside the instant pot while you place the eggs, because otherwise the eggs can move around while you place the inner pot inside the instant pot.
- Also, make sure you have positioned the instant pot in it's right position for cooking so you do not have to move it around after placing the eggs.
- Adding a little salt or baking soda to the water (just need to sprinkle a little) before boiling the eggs might help reduce the chance of eggs breaking while boiling.
how long to boil the eggs in the instant pot?
To make hard boiled eggs, you need to boil the eggs for about 8 to 9 minutes depending on your preference of texture for the hard boiled eggs. I usually do 8 minutes for hard boiled eggs and then do a natural pressure release of 5 minutes, after which I manually release the pressure. If you want soft boiled eggs, you may go for the 5-5-5 method where you boil the eggs for 5 minutes and then do a manual pressure release after 5 minutes of natural pressure release and then give a cold ice water bath for the boiled eggs for 5 minutes. You can change the consistency and texture of your boiled eggs by adjusting the time accordingly. In this recipe for boiled eggs in the instant pot, we are going to cook the eggs for 8 minutes followed by a careful and gradual manual pressure release after waiting for a natural pressure release for 5 minutes. Then we immediately transfer the boiled eggs for cold ice water bath and wait until the eggs are completely cooled, before peeling the eggs.
So here is how you can make easy and delicious boiled eggs in the instant pot without using trivet or rack.
