If you wonder how to toast bread in oven or how to toast bread (without a bread toaster) at 400 degree Fahrenheit, this post is for you! There are two ways you can toast plain bread in conventional oven. You can use the broil setting in your oven to toast the bread nicely with a crunchy texture and perfectly browned surfaces.
Just like pancakes, toasted bread is simple but delicious breakfast when served with fruit jam, butter, cheese etc along with sides like fried eggs, sunny side up eggs, boiled eggs or vegetables like stir fried bell peppers, spinach scrambled eggs, potatoes etc! If you like toast for breakfast, also try this simple delicious french toast with sandwich bread, avocado toast sandwich with egg omelette, wheat french toast and cinnamon sugar toast!
Fruit jams like strawberry jam, peach jam, mango jam, blueberry jam, orange jam, plum jam etc or fruit compotes or sauces like peach sauce, strawberry sauce, blueberry sauce, mango sauce etc are other great fruit based options to serve with simple, plain toast! If you just want the bread slices to be slightly toasted without browning the bread, you can do that simply by baking the bread (will explain in the post) without using the broil setting.
Either way, you can make delicious, crunchy toasted bread in your oven! This oven method for toasting bread is so helpful when you don't have a toaster or if you have to toast may slices of bread easily or if you have large batches of bread to toast.
I also have this other post on how to toast bread without toaster if you want to know how you can easily toast bread on stove top (where I have also explained briefly about how you can toast in oven as well). However, oven method is much more simpler if you have more bread slices to toast as it saves more time and can be done more easily.
what oven temperature is good for toasting bread?
I prefer using a temperature of 400 degree Fahrenheit to toast the bread. This is because, at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, the toasting happens quickly and you get nice, crunchy toasted bread in few minutes.
You may also bake at a lower temperature of 350 degree Fahrenheit if you do not want the bread to be very crunchy in texture.
Obviously, baking at 350 degree Fahrenheit takes little longer time to toast the bread than baking at 400 degree Fahrenheit, but if you prefer a softer toasted bread, the best option is to use 350 degree Fahrenheit.
However, if you want a crunchy toasted bread, the best option is to bake at 400 degree Fahrenheit which is my recommended method for making beautiful toasted bread in the oven!
how long should you toast the bread at 400 degree fahrenheit in oven?
When you toast the bread at 400 degree Fahrenheit, you can bake for 4 minutes first, then flip the bread slices and toast for another 3 to 4 minutes.
If you decide to toast at 350 degree Fahrenheit, you can toast for 4 to 5 minutes first and then flip and toast the slices for another 4 to 5 minutes depending on how toasted you prefer the bread to be.
when to use broiler setting in oven to toast bread?
If you want to toast your bread nicely and quickly with a crunchy texture and browned surfaces, you can use the broiler setting. Just preheat your oven for few minutes, press the broiler setting (if it shows high and low settings, you can select the high setting).
Bake the bread slices for about 4 minutes first, then flip and bake for about 2 to 3 minutes until desired texture is reached. In this easy recipe for bread toast, we toast plain bread without any butter or any other added ingredients. Once the bread is toasted, we can add the toppings like spreadable butter, jam, fruit preserves, nutella, cheese, peanut butter etc or whaever you prefer.
how to toast bread in the oven with butter?
If you wish to add butter to the bread slices before you bake them, the butter will melt and the resulting bread slices will have slightly more crunchy/fried texture. It's not a good idea to add a lot of butter or oil while you toast the bread in the oven, as it is best to use spreadable butter once you have toasted the bread. However, you may spread a little butter (you can use softened butter or spreadable butter) in the bread before toasting if you wish. Just about a teaspoon of butter on one side of the slice will be enough, if you want to add butter to the bread slices before toasting the bread.
Adding little butter to the bread will make it more crunchy, but will also turn too buttery or oily in texture if you add more. I have a good recipe for cinnamon toast in the oven with butter here where we use a mixture of butter, sugar and cinnamon to toast delicious bread in the oven!
