Blueberry lemon infused water or simply blueberry leon citrus flavored water is refreshing chilled water infused with fresh or frozen berries and fresh lemon slices for a wonderful drink in the morning or anytime you are thirsty!
This is prepared using just 3 ingredients which are water, fresh blueberries and lemon slices to which you can also add ice cubes if desired.
The light pink color of this blueberry water is because some of the blueberries are poked with a toothpick (or use a fork), which releases blueberry juice & a sweet flavor.
If you skip poking the blueberries, it won't add much color to the drink.
I have tried the blueberry water in both ways and you can make it whichever way you prefer.
Blueberry lemon citrus flavored water is super easy to make at home and if you want to add more flavor to yourhomemde summer drinks or fall holiday drinks, adding fresh blueberries is one of the most easy ways to do that!
Hot lemon water is typically preferred in the morning by those who look for weight loss & many health reasons, but if you are looking to start your day with a cold lemon water drink in the morning, this blueberry lemon water may be for you.
If you want to enjoy this infused blueberry lemon water in the morning, you can prepare this easily in the night before you go to sleep and enjoy the drink early in the morning as soon as you get up (only if you want to enjoy this in the morning) or you can enjoy this anytime as you like.
What is infused water?
Infused water is chilled water infused with fruits and/or herbs like mint.
Fruits like blueberries can be added whole, while fruits like peaches, strawberries etc are sliced and added to water to make infused water.
Herbs like mint leaves are also added to make infused water.
Often lemon slices or lime are added along with fruits (or alone) to make citrus flavored water.
The water with added fruit, herbs, lemon etc are kept in pitchers or jars and kept refrigerated at least a few hours (about 3 to 4 hours or upto 24 hours if the fruits stays fresh) to make infused water.
How long does infused water last in the refrigerator?
If you use fresh fruits and water, infused water can stay fresh in the refrigerator for at least a couple of days.
It is a good idea to remove the fruits after about 24 hours and store the prepared infused water in refrigerator for a couple of days and serve chilled when ready to use.
Yyou can eat the blueberries or anyother fruit that you used to make the infused water and squeeze the lemon or lime slices into the water if you wish.
I do not recommend storing the infused water in refrigerator for more than a couple of days.
But if you wish to store it for more longer periods, you may transfer the prepared infused water to ice cube trays and store in the freezer where it can stay fresh for longer time.
Tips to make best blueberry lemon infused water for homemade citrus flavored water
Lemon and blueberries are excellent fruits that can make you feel refreshing whether you enjoy them in summer, fall, holidays or anytime of the year.
While lemons are available year round to make refreshing homemade drinks, blueberry season is around the summer when you have access to fresh blueberries.
However, I still find fresh blueberries during other times of the year as well.
If you are blessed with a blueberry plant in your garden, you can use fresh blueberries in making blueberry banana cakes, blueberry jam, blueberry compote, blueberry pancakes, blueberry oatmeal for breakfast & more blueberry desserts and blueberry drinks!
I have lots of blueberry drinks in this blog like homemade fresh blueberry juice, blueberry milkshake, strawberry blueberry smoothie, blueberry peanut butter chocolate smoothie, raspberry blueberry smoothie, blueberry banana smoothie without yogurt etc!
In this blueberry water also, the most important thing to make the best flavored water is to use the most fresh & best blueberries.
If the blueberries itself is not fresh, the blueberry water won't taste good.
You may also use frozen blueberries to make the infused water, if that is what you have, but I recommend using fresh blueberries if you have because frozen blueberries may quickly wilt making the water more cloudy in texture.
Also, make sure to use fresh lemons to make the infused water, because the citrus flavor of lemon is so important which makes you feel more refreshed and less thirsty!
How to make homemade blueberry lemon infused water?
We use the following ingredients & following method to make easy, refreshing, homemade blueberry lemon infused water.
ingredients to make blueberry lemon infused water
fresh blueberries 1 cup
water 2.5 cups preferably chilled (may adjust the amount as needed)
ice cubes as needed (optional)
lemon slices 2 or as desired (adding more slices of lemon could result in slightly bitter flavor)
Step by step instructions
Wash the blueberries very well and add to a pitcher or mason jars or any glass jars along with lemon slices.
If using mason jars or glass jars, you may use multiple small sized jars to make individual servings.
I used two glass jars here to make blueberry lemon infused water.
For more blueberry flavor & light pink color, you may poke a few blueberries with a fork or a toothpick (this is optional, but it adds a nice sweet flavor & color from blueberries so I recommend doing that).
In one of the jars, I poked a few blueberries with a toothpick, but I didn't do this for the other jar.
Also add ice cubes if you wish and fill the pitcher or mason jars or any glass jars with water.
Chill this in the refrigerator for at least 2 to 3 hours.
If you used pitcher, transfer to glass cups (you can add ice cubes to the cups before adding the blueberry water if you wish), serve & enjoy!
If you made them in mason jars, you can simply enjoy them right out of the refrigerator which is even more easier to do!
As you can see the one jar with a few poked blueberries got a light hint of pink & purple color which makes it look more colorful!
You may also refill the cups of jars with more chilled water, ice cubes or lemon juice as you like Iif you are using it the same day.
If keeping for another couple of days, it is a good idea to remove the fruits and just store the water).
Once the water is all over, you can enjoy the blueberries though they will have little less flavor than usual, since the flavor is also infused to the water.
Can you make blueberry infused water without lemon?
Yes, if you do not want the citrus flavor, you may skip the lemon slices.
However, adding lemon can really add more flavor to this infused water just like you can flavor many drinks like homemade fresh orange juice, pomegranate juice, strawberry juice, cranberry juice, kiwi juice etc with lemon eaily!
Without lemon, the flavor of the infused water will just have the flavor from blueberries, so make sure to use the best quality fresh blueberries for best results.
Also, make sure to poke a few blueberries with a toothpick so the natural blueberry juice will release into the water, making it more flavorful and slightly sweet!
If you do not poke the blueberries and if you do not use any lemon or lime, the blueberry water could be relatively less in flavor.
