What Is Self Rising Flour?

What Is Self Rising Flour Used For?

Self rising flour is prepared with added baking powder in it and sometimes contain baking soda, salt etc for leavening.

So usually you do not need to add extra baking powder while you use self rising flour to make pancakes, waffles or any baked goods.

You can also use it to make delicious self rising flour cookies with chocolate chips!

However, it is always a good idea to check the ingredients list in the self rising flour you have purchased, so you know what all is added in it.

In this recipe, I used bleached self rising flour which already contains baking powder, so we do not need any extra baking powder in the recipe.

Self rising flour is said to have less protein content than all purpose flour and the pancakes made using self rising flour will usually tend to be more softer in texture.

Self rising flour is usually used to make soft & fluffy pancakes, waffles and baked goods.

These homemade pancakes are totally delicious, fluffy, soft and slightly dense in texture as we use three eggs to make these pancakes, along with using whole milk and butter.

In addition to that, we use a secret ingredient in this homemade pancake mix which is dry milk powder, that makes the pancakes even more delicious.

Milk Powder In Pancake Mix

As I told, we use dry milk powder in this homemade pancakes.

Adding milk powder (either whole milk or low fat) will make the homemade pancakes more delicious, soft & fluffy in texture. Also it will improve the flavor of the pancakes a lot.

You may make these pancakes without using the milk powder too, if you do not have the milk powder at home.

But the flavor will be slightly lesser than the pancakes that use the milk powder, as they will be more rich & flavorful.

These pancakes with milk powder are so rich, perfect and delicious these are the best pancakes I have made with self rising flour.

Can you make these pancakes without self rising flour?

Yes, you can make these pancakes without self rising flour if you use baking powder.

To substitute self rising flour in this pancake recipe, just replace the 2 cups of self rising flour with 2 cups of all purpose flour and also use 2 teaspoons of baking powder to make fluffy pancakes.

Just make sure to evenly mix the baking powder with the dry flour before you add in the wet ingredients mixture.

The texture may be slightly different when you use substitute self rising flour with all purpose flour and baking powder, but it will still be delicious.

What if you do not have baking powder or self rising flour?

If you do not have baking powder or self rising flour, you still can make these milk powder pancakes.

pancakes without pancake mix

You need to separate the egg whites and egg yolks and then whip the egg whites to form soft peaks, which should be used to make the pancake batter if you do not have baking powder and self rising flour.

This process is clearly explained in this post on pancakes without baking powder which you may follow.

Can You Make This Vegan?

To make this recipe vegan, you will need to make some changes.

Instead of using butter, you may use oil. Instead of using milk, you can use almond milk, and you can skip the milk powder too.

To replace eggs, you may use flax seeds powder to make flax eggs.

In this recipe for pancakes without eggs, I have used flax to make the delicious pancakes but that recipe is different from this one.

I haven’t tried to make this recipe vegan, but you may try by making these changes though the flavor and texture of the pancakes may not be the same.
