what is self rising flour & what is it used for?

Self rising flour is prepared with added baking powder in it and sometimes contain baking soda, salt etc for leavening. So usually you do not need to add extra baking powder while you use self rising flour to make pancakes, waffles or any baked goods. You can also use it to make delicious self rising flour cookies with chocolate chips, peanut butter cookies, strawberry peach cobbler, easy peach cobbler from scratch, eggless cinnamon pancakes, chocolate m&m cookies, easy blueberry cobbler and more!

However, it is always a good idea to check the ingredients list in the self rising flour you have purchased, so you know what all is added in it. In this recipe, I used bleached self rising flour which already contains baking powder, so we do not need any extra baking powder in the recipe.

    self rising flour pancakes fluffy

Self rising flour is said to have less protein content than all purpose flour and the pancakes made using self rising flour will usually tend to be more softer in texture. Self rising flour is usually used to make soft & fluffy pancakes, waffles and baked goods. These homemade pancakes are totally delicious, fluffy, soft and slightly dense in texture as we use three eggs to make these pancakes, along with using whole milk and butter. In addition to that, we use a secret ingredient in this homemade pancake mix which is dry milk powder, that makes the pancakes even more delicious.

using milk powder in homemade pancake mix as an ingredient

As I mentioned, we use dry milk powder in this homemade pancakes. Adding milk powder (either whole milk or low fat) will make the homemade pancakes more delicious, soft & fluffy in texture, just like we use milk powder to make these delicious milk cookies! Also it will improve the flavor of the pancakes a lot. You may make these pancakes without using the milk powder too, if you do not have the milk powder at home. But the flavor will be slightly lesser than the pancakes that use the milk powder, as they will be more rich & flavorful. These pancakes with milk powder are so rich, perfect and delicious these are the best pancakes I have made with self rising flour.

Since we use self rising flour to make these delicious pancakes, the process is even more easy and we do not need to add any additional baking powder or baking soda to make the pancake batter.

can you make these pancakes without self rising flour?

Yes, you can make these pancakes without self rising flour if you use baking powder. To substitute self rising flour in this pancake recipe, just replace the 2 cups of self rising flour with 2 cups of all purpose flour and also use 2 teaspoons of baking powder to make fluffy pancakes. Just make sure to evenly mix the baking powder with the dry flour before you add in the wet ingredients mixture. The texture may be slightly different when you use substitute self rising flour with all purpose flour and baking powder, but it will still be delicious.

what if you do not have baking powder or self rising flour?

If you do not have baking powder or self rising flour, you still can make these milk powder pancakes. You need to separate the egg whites and egg yolks and then whip the egg whites to form soft peaks, which should be used to make the pancake batter if you do not have baking powder and self rising flour. This process is clearly explained in this post on pancakes without baking powder which you may follow.

can you make these pancakes vegan?

To make this recipe vegan, you will need to make some changes.

Instead of using butter, you may use oil. Instead of using milk, you can use almond milk or oat milk to make the pancakes, and you can skip the milk powder too. To replace eggs, you may use flax seeds powder to make flax eggs. In this recipe for pancakes without eggs, I have used flax to make the delicious pancakes but that recipe is different from this one. You may try to make vegan pancakes by making these changes though the flavor and texture of the pancakes may not be the same.

These are good pancakes. I have an excess of self rising flour that I need to use and this will probably be my base recipe. I would add salt next time and perhaps more butter as I needed to add milk to thin out out just a bit to get pancakes like the photos.

these were very good. I liked the addition of cinnamon, and they cooked up nicely. I would like them perhaps just a bit fluffier but it's not a deal breaker of any kind. I'll will definitely make these again.

In addition, for this recipe, I substituted 1 cup of cake flour for the 2 cups of self-rising flour, and combined those two together, with the rest of the other dry ingredients, and also added for extra insurance that the pancakes will brown and rise and stay light and fluffy, a 1/2 tsp of baking powder and a 1/4 tsp of baking soda, and these pancakes pair well with some hardwood-smoked-crispy bacon, with full-flavor and the salt from the bacon helps bring out the flavors of the pancakes.

Thanks again, using cake flour sounds great! Cake flour with added self rising flour and baking powder gives even more softer and lighter texture I guess! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe 🙂 Thank you so much for your feedback, it's much appreciated!!
