I used gala apples to make this apple cobbler from scratch, but you may use other suitable varieties of apples of your choice.
My favorite way to enjoy apple cobbler is to top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or salted caramel ice cream, but it also goes great with many other flavors.
I love to enjoy the apple cobbler warm (with ice cream) or chilled, but I have found that it tastes the best when you chill it in the refrigerator for a day.
So if you bake the apple cobbler today evening, enjoy a serving of cobbler while its still warm and then refrigerate any leftovers so you can have it chilled the next day and see which one you like the best.
I think its perfect either ways, but its most delicious once its chilled.
What Is Apple Cobbler?
Apple cobbler is one of the most popular and delicious Southern desserts made using apples.
Apple cobbler is different from apple crisp or crumbles and also it is different from apple pies and apple cakes, but a cobbler is even more easy to make and very delicious too!
You first layer the prepared apples in the prepared pan and then top the apples with the batter for cobbler and you bake it. It is so simple and easy to make from scratch and as you now, it is too delicious when served with ice cream (its delicious on its own too!).
Unlike apple crisp, we do not use any oatmeal to make the batter for apple cobbler and so the cooked batter of the cobbler is more smooth and soft in texture.
Similarly, the batter of the apple cobbler is also different from that of apple cake or the dough made for apple pie.
The texture is totally different for the pies as the crust for the pie is more of a pastry like texture, while the apple cobbler has a more soft, melt in your mouth texture.
More popular fruit recipes in this blog includes instant pot peach jam, instant pot plum jam, instant pot mango jam, instant pot strawberry honey jam etc.
What Kind Of Apples Are Best To Make Apple Cobbler?
As I mentioned above, I used gala apples to make this delicious & easy apple cobbler.
I loved how the cobbler turned out and so I think gala apples are perfect for making apple cobbler.
However, there is a lot of choice when it comes to picking apples to make apple cobbler.
A lot of kind of apples are great for making apple cobbler including honey crisp, golden delicious, granny smith, fuji apples etc.
The flavors may vary based on the kind of apples you choose for the recipe as some of the apples maybe more tart in flavor while some are more sweet.
How To Make Easy Apple Cobbler From Scratch Using Fresh Apples?
It is easy to make apple cake from scratch using fresh apples and we just need few ingredients other than the fresh apples to make the filling and batter for the apple cobbler. Below you can see the ingredients needed to make apple cobbler from scratch.
ingredients to make easy apple cobbler
for filling:
apples 6 to 7 medium sized
brown sugar ½ cup
butter 2 tablespoons
cinnamon powder 1 teaspoon
nutmeg ¼ teaspoon (optional)
for the batter (topping):
all purpose flour 1.5 cups
baking powder 2 teaspoons
salt a pinch
cinnamon powder 1 teaspoon
whole milk 1 cup (at room temperature)
butter ½ cup melted
sugar ¾ cup
brown sugar ¼ cup
vanilla extract 1 teaspoon
Step By Step Instructions
to prepare the apple cobbler filling
Peel and core the apples and slice them in slightly thick slices.
Melt the 2 tablespoons butter in a saucepan and add the apple slices.
Saute the apples in the butter for about a minute. Add in the brown sugar, cinnamon powder & nutmeg for the apple filling, mix everything well and keep this mixture aside.
to make the batter for cobbler
In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients first - flour, baking powder, cinnamon powder and salt until all ingredients are evenly mixed.
In another bowl add the melted butter and add the sugar, mix very well.
Also add the milk & vanilla extract to the butter sugar mixture, mix everything well together.
To make the batter, transfer the wet ingredients mixture slowly to the dry flour mixture and mix in.
Also add the ¼ cup of brown sugar for the batter and mix everything well to form the batter. Do not overmix but make sure there is no dry flour in the batter and all the ingredients in the batter are well blended.
to make easy apple cobbler
Preheat oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit.
Prepare a pan greased with little butter and layer the apple filling mixture in a single layer.
Pour the prepared batter over the apple filling and using a spoon, spread the batter evenly across the pan to almost cover the apples, and then gently mix in the batter a little so some of the apple slices are visible outside.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 50 to 60 minutes of time or until the cobbler is baked and the apples look juicy and the top is golden brown in color.
One tip to make the perfect apple cobbler is to check the apple cobbler after about 35 minutes of time, and if the topping begins to brown, cover the pan with a foil and bake for the remaining time which will help to retain the moisture content of the dish, making it more delicious and juicy!
Allow the apple cobbler to cool down slightly, then scoop out and serve the slightly warm apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream or any ice cream of your choice!
How To Serve Apple Cobbler?
Apple cobbler is delicious on its own, but the best way to serve apple cobbler is to serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
I like to serve it with vanilla ice cream or salted caramel ice cream, butterscotch ice cream etc.
You may serve this with any ice cream of your choice though. Scoop out a piece of slightly warm apple cobbler and serve it with cold vanilla ice cream for the best results.
Apple cobbler tastes even more delicious when chilled in the refrigerator, so if you like it that way, cool it in the refrigerator first and then serve it with the cold ice crea for a delicious cold dessert.
This is also very refreshing and perfect during the spring or hot summer months, though this is most popular as a fall dessert!
How To Store Apple Cobbler?
You can store the apple cobbler easily in refrigerator for few days.
I usually store the leftovers in the same pan I used to bake the cobbler but you may use any containers that you use to store food in the refrigerator.

I made this last night for dessert for fam using an 8x8 square pyrex dish. Recipe doesn't specify pan size. It had to bake 35 mins uncovered and continued to bake another 55 mins. Total bake time was about 1 1/2 hrs total. Next time I will use a bigger pan & hopefully it will firm up faster. Very good cobbler & will keep recipe. We served cobbler w vanilla ice cream and it was a big hit! Tu!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I am so glad you liked this apple cobbler recipe 🙂 I used a 9 inch round baking pan and I think using slightly bigger sized pans could reduce the total baking time since the batter is more thinly spread. Also the baking times could slightly vary based on different ovens and types of apples that are used. Thanks again for your valuable feedback, much appreciated!
Marlene
I made this last night. It was so smooth and delicious. I will be making this again
